The third installment of the COOL Certificate, Exploring the Edges, was taught by Nobuko Fujita.
This course explored the use of gamification to entice students to participate as much (or as little) as they wanted. I personally enjoyed this approach as I wanted to strive to gain as many points possible, and thus win the game. I recognize that this approach may not be the best approach for every teacher or every student, but it was my first experience with gamification, and I enjoyed the uniqueness of this method.
Although theoretical underpinnings were introduced in part one of this certificate, in this installment we expanding on certain topics, more specifically, that of Constructivism and Connectivism. First glancing into these topics can be overwhelming and confusing, but a very interesting twitter conversation occurred as a result, and in essence, became a live illustration of the concepts we were trying to comprehend. Here are some excerpts:
With the help of Alicia Higgison we also began the development of our e-portfolios (what you are now reading!).
Last but not least, we were also assigned to create a Blog Post related to the course or the entire certificate. As noted on the general COOL Certificate tab within my e-portfolio, I collaborated with a classmate to develop our top four learning lessons from the Certificate of Online & Open Learning.
