Technology in the Classroom

This multimedia reflection serves as a response to the Technologist module from the ecampus Ontario website. When teaching in the society today the classroom will undoubtedly have technology in a variety of forms present. As an educator it is important to have digital literacy with these technologies as it can be very rewarding both personally and for your students. Before reading this technologist module I had never really thought of having a proper way to get technology involved in the classroom. However, this module brings a variety of strategies to the educator to properly find a technological tool that can be utilized in the classroom. This video does job of explaining what the module is about.

One of the most eye opening concepts in the module is the concept of becoming familiar with digital literacy. Digital literacy is extremely important because it involves understanding relevant technology being used in the present. Technology rapidly changes. Therefore, in order to be digitally literate will always require the understanding of new technologies and programs overtime.

The medium I have chosen to do my my multimedia reflection on is twitter. Having used the basics of twitter beforehand I was not exactly sure how well this website would be able to get my ideas out about technology. While doing the multimedia reflection I found twitter does well if there is not a lot to say at one time. The limited characters can really make it difficult to get out a full idea in one tweet. I found twitter does a good job of providing one to many communications. Being able to hashtag your tweets is very useful for reaching a target audience.

Overall, the module was very informative and expanded my own personal approach on how to properly incorporate digital technology into the classroom. It also made me realize how important it is to be digitally literate in the world today, especially as an educator.

Integrating Technology Into Student Education

I choose to do the article Teaching in a Participatory Digital World by Jacobsen, M. The article does a good job presenting the perspective of how important technology is in the education system in today’s society. The educators of today must be willing to learn and adapt to using new technologies in the classroom. There is great importance in applying these technologies in the classroom. Students can have a more individualized education by using the internet as a resource for their specific topics of interest. The article mentioned that people that are interested in something more niche can now be interconnected on the internet and gain access to previously unavailable information. Not only is more information accessible through technology but students obtain a deeper understanding of material and can complete more complex learning goals when supplemented with the right use of digital technology.

The article changed the way I viewed how important the use if technology is in schooling, teaching and learning. The importance of teachers knowing how to utilize the use of technology can affect their students. The article really opened my eyes and made it clear that many different organizations and people are responsible for teachers to learn about these technologies. It was important to learn from the article that students obtain a deeper understanding of concepts by integrating technology into their learning. More complex learning goals can be achieved for your students as well. Ultimately, the article informed me how useful, important and life changing proper use of technology can be to students in the classroom.

For this multimedia reflection I choose to use coggle. Coggle is a website that allows you to create a digital mind map. At first use it did not seem very user friendly. As time went on the program became quite easy to use. I recommend using a mouse when trying to create a mind map on Coggle to improve your experience. Coggle allows the use of inserting images into the mind map which can greatly enhance the theme. There are, however, several features that are locked behind having a subscription which is a drawback. Overall, Coggle was good to use for this article as it allowed for lots of connections to made with the main theme of the article. It was easy to make connections between ideas with Coggle because of the connections you can make with the branches of the mind map.

Questioning Our Pedagogy

I choose to do the Hybrid Pedagogy podcast with guest speaker Amy Collier. The program I decided to use for my digital expression of the podcast was padlet. The podcast was very interesting and Amy Collier made many good points about the way educators think about their pedagogy in today’s education system. During the podcast we learn about critical thinking and how it can change the formulaic expression of pedagogy by teachers. It is very important that a instructivist model is changed and modified to a more constructivist model through the process of learnification. The education system needs to be as personalized as possible. The constructivist approach changes the way students think and instead of mass producing students that are all the same we can have students that want to ask the inherent questions about things they are interested in.

Lastly, learning outcomes are not always a bad thing but they are usually generalized to the whole class being at some specific point in the curriculum. These types of learning outcomes are forced upon the students and brings them to a point where they all know the same knowledge usually learned the same way. These types of pedagogy and learning values need to be re-evaluated. Evaluation by the use of critical thinking when done correctly can create a more individualistic learning experience that will spark inherent questions leading to new ideas maybe never seen before.
