Here is an assignment I completed for my Contemporary Social Issues in Education course:
Enduring Gender Expectations As a Child
Creating this piece allowed me to exercise my perception as a young student once again–it allowed me to see the school environment, not just through the lenses of a student teacher learning to teach, but as a previous child who endured disadvantages as a result of my gender. It is important to reflect on your own experiences in order to gain some understanding of the lives of your students–it is also important to note that your students’ experiences are completely individual and unique and cannot be determined by one’s own. I think that becoming aware of this is taking a step in the right direction, and accepting that your students come into your classroom with varying aspects of life and experience.
