Assessment Tools

There are many different ways to assess the performance of students. I find that different assessment tools gives way for all students to learn and understand what they need to improve in a simpler way. For instance, feedback comments are better along the way then at the end. We want to set students up to succeed not fail. Making these expectations known ahead of time allows for this to occur.

Quiz/Test Reviews

Notre Dame Catholic Elementary

AT – Mrs. Erin Sementilli

November/December 2022

For quizzes or tests I like to give them information about the format as well as all of the information the test will be on. This review was for my Grade 8 class at Notre Dame. If they complete their own study notes including all the concepts mentioned on the review they would get a bonus mark. This gets them into the habit of creating study notes as well as they are learning the information when they make them.

Dance Rubric

Notre Dame Catholic Elementary

AT – Mrs. Erin Sementilli

November/December 2022

This rubric was used for the Grade 8’s summative assessment of learning for their dance. They were made known of the components I was looking for in their dance and a success criteria checklist was given and hung up in the classroom for a constant reminder.

Machine Rap Checklist Rubric

St. Rose Catholic Elementary

AT – Mrs. Laurie Clement

March/April 2023

The Grade 4’s were required to make a rap that included their learning about pulley, gears, wheels and axles. Within their rap they had to include what they are (components), specific examples, and how the simple machine works. If they included all they got it. If they only included pulley or a gear in their understanding they were almost there. If they included nothing regarding the success criteria they were at not yet. This let them know where they were at and what they needed to improve on. This activity was used as an assessment of learning as they already learned the material and practiced through assessments for and as.

Creation Contest One-Point Rubric

St. Rose Catholic Elementary

AT – Mrs. Laurie Clement

March/April 2023

For their summative assessment of learning. The Grade 4’s, using their learning from the Machines and Their Mechanisms Science Unit had to create a machine as their final project. They had to include at least one wheel and axle or a pulley in their design. Materials were given and they could bring their own materials if desired. They had a design process handout before creating their machine. The one point rubric allowed them to see what is considered a level 3 and comments would be written if they exceeded those expectations and comments for if they required improvement in the categorial areas. They then could reflect on their design in the end.
