Achieving Sense of Belonging for International Students at Ontario Secondary Schools

This research project will focus on learning more about how different Ontario secondary schools achieve a sense of belonging for international students.  We are considering partnering with Windsor-Essex area educational institutions.

    Micro-aggressions of International Students

This research project will explore micro-aggressions experienced by international students at a mid-sized Canadian university. It will examine potential micro-aggressions, how micro-aggressions influence international students’ sense of belonging, how international students cope with discrimination, and what universities should do to minimize micro-aggressions among international students.

    Mentoring in Postsecondary Education

Students in their first year of university often face challenges adjusting to the university environment (Meehan & Howells, 2018). As a first step, we are conducting a systematic literature review to more fully understand how and why mentoring is done in postsecondary educational institutions. Once we understand more fully both the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ of student mentoring, we will consider developing a focused research project.

Improving International Student Engagement in Higher Education Classrooms

This is a multi-national study involving partner institutions from Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany that will explore the factors associated with increasing international student participation in postsecondary education classes. It will identify successful teaching practices that will form the basis of research dissemination that will include workshops, conference presentations, and possible publications.
