Dr. Smith conducts research with the Teaching International Students, Student Mentoring, and Strategic Enrolment Management research groups. He is currently researching the following topics:

- Use of Open Educational Resources (OER) to enhance interdisciplinary and deep learning
- Mentoring of teacher candidates within faculties of education
- Critical analysis of strategic enrolment management in Canada
- Sense of belonging for international students at Ontario secondary schools
- Micro-discrimination of international students in post-secondary educational institutions

- Chapter 1, Teaching Practices and Student Satisfaction, describes three studies that explore promising teaching practices for teaching linguistically and culturally-diverse international students by identifying teaching practices that have high levels of international student satisfaction and student perceptions of learning. The first study, using a mixed-methods approach, found eight teaching practice areas that resonated with students. The second study, using a qualitative approach, identified similarities and dissimilarities between STEM and non-STEM students. The third study, using a qualitative approach, uncovered student preferences for online teaching practices. Recommendations for professional practice are discussed, along with potential areas for further research.
