A passionate humanitarian, dedicated teacher, and internationally renowned researcher, Alastair Summerlee served as president of the University of Guelph in 2003-14. During his tenure as president Summerlee oversaw major expansion of the University, with more than $1 billion of new and renovated space and successfully led the largest capital campaign in the history of the University. Dr. Summerlee joined the PEARL community to discuss how we can rethink our approach to university education and truly prepare graduates for the world they will inhabit. Through his interactive session he explained several methods used at the University of Guelph, especially with first year undergraduate students and the effectivity of these methods. Strategic planning when forming classes as well as joined classes where the professor takes the role of the instructor and rather than teaching guides students were the most discussed ones. During his visit, Dr. Summerlee, also took time to personally meet with various various faculty members to share his knowledge and broad experience on teaching and learning.
