Commitment to Students and Student Learning

This is one of five standards of practice in the Ontario teaching profession that references educators dedication, care and commitment to all students. That dedication includes respect and equitable treatment of students as well as sensitivity to things that impact the individual learning. In addition, there is also a focus on assisting students towards good Canadian citizenship/stewardship.

Accommodation for students having difficulty with multiplication, offering a customized sensory learning opportunity to assist their learning.

This is a graphic organizer specifically designed for a student who was having challenges with multiplication and was offered as a way to explore various strategies for understanding the concept while incorporating a multi-sensory experience.  This fits in with this particular standard, as it shows the dedication and sensitivity in assisting the various individual learning needs. In this instance, even though the math curriculum was modified significantly; the student required concrete examples and strategies in order find what would work best for their learning.  My commitment towards students that have learning exceptionalities; formalized or otherwise is continuous. This is just one example of the unique remediation materials that I have designed and implemented with success.

Virtual Learning is present in all grades throughout Canada and many other parts of the world due to a health pandemic which necessitated that schools shut their doors and pivot to online learning so the population could remain safe from the contagion and students could resume their learning. At this time, I was prompted to action and share my skills in creating digital resources for teachers and students alike to assist learning during such a precarious and uncertain time. I designed a digital resource for students to hone their fraction skills and offered to students, educators and parents alike in this google slide link. My commitment continues as I share of my time and skill and love for all things education. Link provided below.

Commitment to equity and diversity paired with my skill with technology. What a simple way to incorporate an inclusivity into the virtual classroom by incorporating various themes dispersed over the many weeks that students are engaged in the online learning platform. These were created for use in any slides program and teachers can take advantage by using the pre-created backdrops and just put in their customized links for their student’s work. When students see their diversity represented in the level of the everyday, it creates a sense of acceptance and connectedness that is a vital component of how learning happens.

Virtual summer camp with GECDSB was an incredible experience and one that students noted unanimous appreciation for the activities and learning that took place. This year there was a unique activity that was incorporated within my own team that was a student-led and interest-based service-learning project. This was an incredible success and one that will undoubtedly be repeated in future summer camps. The intended and unintended benefits to acts of service are vast in an educational environment including improving students’ personal efficacy, academic learning outcomes, commitment to service, moral development, and leadership and communications skills (Eyler, Giles, Stenson, & Gray, 2001). The implementation and facilitation of this type of initiative has significant work involvement from both educator and student perspective. However, as educators, we are all about student success and that is the driver of all that we do. Here is the fabulous job the students did with the virtual reader’s theater that was ultimately shared with the seniors within our respective communities. Video/Photo consents obtained for all participants.
