In November 2019, I started my first practicum experience at LaSalle West Sandwich Public elementary School. It has been a rewarding and wonderful learning experience. I was given the opportunity to observe for the first two weeks and then start teaching certain subjects along with my associate teacher to an audience of a grade 6/7 split French Immersion classroom. I have quickly came to realize how diverse the classroom environment was and noticed, by being exposed to a diverse range of needs that this was going to be an exciting journey to embark on. It has been a memorable and gratifying experience, being able to be exposed to a diverse audience and connect with all students. Despite the grade difference, students were able to acquire and learn the material effectively, with the teacher directing concept and topics that would be applied differently and be connected to both levels of comprehension always involving students throughout activities. A key aspect of all students has been the proficiency and interest within the French language and English, always participating and answering most of the questions asked in class using the vocabulary they have learned. There was also a big curiosity and spark for raising questions as well as addressing comments as wanting to develop further knowledge in the field.
It has been wonderful noticing the way students felt motivated when developing projects and activities. http://uwindsor.icampus21.com/wordpress/silansortino/wp-content/uploads/sites/4855/2020/04/Silan1-2-768×1024.jpg http://uwindsor.icampus21.com/wordpress/silansortino/wp-content/uploads/sites/4855/2020/04/Sila-2-768×1024.jpgI recall one student who usually used the computer to write assignments, but when encouraged, he took on new risks and felt that he could take on writing in pen. He started to raise his hand when having a comment or a question and was happy to share his response. I have come to see the importance of establishing a genuine and collaborative relationship with my associate teacher and have learned greatly from the ways classroom management skills and lessons were structured. I will always cherish and bring along the advise and encouragement received from my AT and will make sure to implement it along the journey.
