Commitment to Students and Student Learning

This is an assessment of Grade 5 student work from my second practicum placement in December 2020. For this language project, students created poems about a holiday of their choice, using words to describe their five senses. Before creating their poems, students spent time doing a guided meditation exercise to quietly reflect on their personal experience of their chosen holiday. Students then displayed their work publicly for their larger school community, which gave them an increased sense of responsibility and pride for their work. I felt that this lesson was very successful as it gave students a chance to share their individual experiences and culture in a creative way, while still keeping it accessible to a wide range of strengths and abilities. The rubric I created served as an effective guide for assessment, and I was able to give feedback with concrete steps for improvement. This artifact is an example of the kind of transparent assessment tools that I will use to provide students with meaningful feedback. I want to continue to build on this foundation and create more flexible, student-led assessment tools so that students feel a sense of pride and personal engagement with their learning.
