Number Talks

Throughout my second placement in a grade 5 classroom, every single day I began the day with a number talk. Numeracy always followed the number talk; however, the number talks did not always touch on the same strand as the math class to follow. Specifically in this placement, I had opportunity to develop and continue a routine with the students, this included writing a simple problem on the board (example: 18 + 22), students had a few moments to look at it and then I would erase the question. This allowed students to really practice the strategy of mental math. Following, as a class we would find the correct answer and discuss various mental math strategies to achieve the correct answer, and address any incorrect answers or mistakes that students made. This was a great system and students did enjoy practicing their mental math strategies.
