Yesterday was Bell Lets Talk day. This day is dedicated to texting, calling or sharing the hashtag as many times as you can. Your Facebook messenger becomes swamped with “share this and 5cents will be donated to…” That is the question; What or Where is all the money donated to? I did not realize until I read the article by Philip Moscovitch in the Globe and Mail that I have no idea what the answer is. Every year I see the poster, Tv and social media ads two weeks prior to the big day. I prepare my friends by informing them I am going to text them a lot of random info so that I could raise as much money as possible. But for what? And Why? Does this day actually help anyone? As Philip Moscovitch outlines so nicely that “It’s hard to argue with raising awareness and fighting stigma. But those things don’t do much to help people who are living in precarious housing or trying to find a way to pay for anti-psychotic medication, which can cost thousands a year.” Instead, what could we be doing with the money spent on those Tv, social media and poster ads? I do not have the answer but I feel that we should be doing more with that 5 cents per text than just ending the stigmas surrounding mental health.
