Gaia

5607802775_7348e388aa_bGaia is graffiti, mural, and graffiti artist from New York. The mural I have posted above shows you the amount of detail he pays attention to in his work. The detail and beauty of his work is what caught my eye when I was searching for an artist to review. His work breaks the boundaries of what we usually think graffiti is. His work compliments and blends into its surroundings while grabbing your eyes’ attention. There is a pattern of innocence and romance in his art, letting you recognize that it is his work. Another element that is common in his paintings is hands. He has mastered the form, shape, and detail of hands working together. His work makes you believe that someone has taken a giant pen or pencil and sketched effortlessly on the wall.

A Sign

What sign could be better than this for a little girl’s photo shoot? For fun, I took out the kids that I babysat for a little photo shoot around the park near their house. As we passed by the outside of the park I spotted this sign that had just the right letters worn away. Signs challenge their use in the creativity of art, because they are usually seen as boring and industrial objects.

A Graffiti Wall

Our class went on a graffiti walk one afternoon to explore the city’s decorated walls. This wall stuck out to me because it made me laugh. It made me realize that graffiti doesn’t need to be serious or beautiful, but it can be humorous. The artist used up the space on the wall brilliantly, filling the wall up with interesting elements. I found this wall very entertaining.

Inspiration

Hannah Gottschalk

This photograph was taken by the artist Hannah Gottschalk, in New York. I came across her work on the blogging site Tumblr. The way that she used film without editing to create such a surreal piece caught my eye. I was inspired by her to continue pursuing non-edited photography.

Before seeing her images, I had been wanting to try taking photos with projected images. With hers coming out so beautifully, I was encouraged to try it myself. For my final project in high school I experimented with self-portraits with projected patterns. Here is one of my own photographs:
