Sienna

The class left early morning to catch the first bus out of Volterra heading to Sienna. It was a hard bus ride to take, the bus was packed and I was beyond tired from little sleep the night before. Sienna is just as hilly as Volterra is if not worse but is still a beautiful. Siennas piazza is one of the only pizzas in Italy that is not flat ground. The piazza is shaped like a sea shell. It is a huge piazza that is famous for still holding its district house racing competition called the Palio. It is a dangerous race because the cobble stone is slippery so they put saw dust and wood chips down to help prevent injury.

Sienna Cathedral also known as the Duomo. Is a classic example of gothic artictecturhe. The church is very famous for facing south north. The reason for this is because the church was suppose to be the biggest church ever built at the time. However, half way through completion the church ran out of money and had to finish the church off with what was already completed. You can still see today if you go to visit what would have been the actually size of the church had it been able to be completed.

Sienna is divided into 15 districts each very proud and competitive. these districts have been a live since the medieval ages and still apply now. This way be very strong for Sienna but it is important to know that this is a common thing throughout most small towns in Italy.
