First project of the semester using found objects.
When I first heard that we were going to be doing a found objects sculpture, I was definitely very excited. Right away I had so many different ideas floating around in my mine as to what I wanted to do, and use. But then, we were told that we had to make it completely abstract, and that’s when things changed for me. Usually I love abstract. But when it comes to sculpting things, I would rather have something I can look off of to make my object. From then, it was just a matter of what material I wanted to use. Right away I thought of straws. That was something simple and light that I could easily carry in and out of my house and Lebel with no problems. So that’s what I went with.
Surprisingly enough, right when I broke out all those 100 straws from that box I knew exactly what I wanted my sculpture to look like. I wanted a, for lack of a better word, a “spiky ball” with some twists.
Putting this spiky ball together was very time consuming. I started by sticking two straws together, then I glued the rest on to each other and so on. I would have to say this project took me about 6 hours to complete.
The end result wasn’t what I was initially going for, but it turned out pretty well. I connected the straws together to create more of a round, I guess you could say, object.
Crit went well for my project. I received lots of comments saying how they liked how colourful it was, and the interesting design. I also got many comments on how it look “sciency”. And it reminded people of science and chemistry.
All in all, I didn’t mind my sculpture. There was definitely room to grow, and there were things I would have changed. But it wasn’t bad.
