Printmaking Research/Source Material/Themes

In my Printmaking class I originally had wanted to play around with soil layers, and the passage of time. This quickly got scraped as I decided to go in a more personal direction and tackle the subject of Science Fiction. In my previous printmaking class I had done a couple intaglio prints based off of superheroes (Specifically Aquaman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

Looking around the internet I managed to find a couple of artists whose works sparked some interest in me.

One by the name of Angie Hoffmeister (Who by coincidence has a tumblr: http://angieiver.tumblr.com/), A freelance illustrator artists from Germany. She has a series of double images, this one “untitled” is one of her many interesting pieces; and the turning point in solidifying my Sci Fi theme:

Another big inspiration for me, going with this theme, has been old 60’s television shows: Think Lost In Space, and Star Trek (TOS).

The Star Trek posters created by Juan Ortiz has also heavily influenced my theme.

These are a sample of his works, they have all been complied into a book called “The Art of Juan Ortiz: Star Trek”

“I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process.”- Van Gogh

Just a quick little quote by my favourite artist of all time, Vincent Van Gogh. As a child I used to take art classes at our town’s Art Gallery (they often focused on a single artists or a theme, and consisted of only a couple of weeks). Van Gogh was one of the artists we learned about, I must have been around the age of 7 at the time, and all I remember is being blown away by his work. As I have progressed through the years I’ve felt a connection to this quote. Art works really are extensions of the artist:  each one will have a different emotion, feeling, and thought. I hope other’s can relate to losing one’s mind to their work.(Quick side note: I’m just going to recommend if you do like Van Gogh, to watch a Doctor Who episode called “Vincent and The Doctor” ) vincent-and-the-doctor
