“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery” – Mark Van Doren. As an educator, it is my role to assist and foster student’s competencies. I believe an important aspect of education is that students have the ability to guide their own journey through school and take control of their own learning experience. In my classroom a student-centred approach is taken to ensure students are motivated and engaged in their own experiences. My style of teaching is shown through student opinion and interests. Lessons are developed based on student generated thoughts, questions and ideas. This is guaranteed to ensure students remain motivated and active in their own learning experience.

As a teacher, I strongly believe in 21st century learning. This style is shown through active use of technology within the classroom to encourage student motivation and desire to learn. My students are taught through multiple literacies to ensure real life success using real world skills. Some of the multiple literacies that heavily influence my classroom are digital literacy, visual literacy, spatial literacy, audio literacy and critical literacy. These are implemented to ensure student ability to construct real world knowledge through different sources. As a whole, student success is attained through desire and drive to attain a goal. If lessons do not have an objective, what is really being learned? My overall goal as an educator is to aid students in reaching their full potential, while fostering their success as an individual.
