Vignette Assessment

It’s your turn to write a short vignette!

Remember that a vignette is:

  • A form of personal narrative or story;
  • A memory, thought, hope, dream or idea;
  • short and descriptive (from 1-5 paragraphs).

Think of a vignette as a short story, focused on a specific time in your life. You must tell this story using detail, descriptions and imagery (describe what you are seeing, hearing, and/or smelling!)

Make the reader feel like they are there with you, the way Esperanza makes us feel like we’re on Mango Street.

Ideas to get you started (you can write about anything you want!):

  • What is one of your favourite memories?
  • What is your family like?
  • Have you ever moved to a new place?
  • Describe a best friend, family member, or person close to you
  • Describe an experience at school
  • Describe an experience you often look back on and think about
  • Describe a family tradition or holiday experience (think about one time in particular, rather than explaining the tradition itself)
