PALS

The images above depict “Leader of the Month” posters I made throughout the semester. The idea behind these posters was for students to see the leaders as undergraduate students and whole people, just like them. By highlighting each leader this way, it also demonstrated the value of them and what they bring to the program.

There was a lot of participation from most students and all of them seemed to like the interactive group problem solving employed. All of the students worked in a large group and helped each other solve the difficult problems. Students that felt comfortable with the material were helping everyone by explaining the steps to solving the problems.

Chemistry PALS Leaders, Winter 2019

Face-to-face

The traditional way of offering such sessions, is in a face-to-face format. We use a flexible learning space on campus, where leaders can facilitate active learning by having students move chairs into groups, write on the white board, use flip charts, etc.

One of the major tenants of the PALS program is that the leaders facilitate activities through which students learn the material. The leaders’ involvement should be minimal, and put the focus on the students helping each other create and share knowledge.

Online

We use Blackboard Collaborate Ultra to facilitate the online sessions.
