The Education Society is a student society which seeks to represent, support and advocate for Bachelor of Education Students at the University of Windsor. The Education Society acts as a link between students and faculty in order to ensure that students’ voices are represented in the Faculty of Education. The society seeks to promote social justice and to enrich the community through numerous internal and external fund-raising initiatives. The goal is to allow students ideas and opinions to be known, while promoting the interests and rights of students in the Bachelor of Education Program at The University of Windsor.
During my first year in the Education Society, I served as a general member and engaged in various fundraising initiatives on behalf of our society. I helped to facilitate several bake sales over the course of the 2016-2017 school year, which raised about seven hundred dollars to benefit the endeavours of the Faculty of Education’s service-learning programs. I also worked alongside other first-year general members to execute a raffle fundraiser, which raised about five hundred dollars to benefit the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society’s “You Can Write a Child’s Story” campaign.
During my second year in the Education Society, I served as the President of the Education Society. In addition, I represented the Intermediate/Senior-level teacher candidates on the Pre-Service Committee, which focuses on addressing matters related to pre-service teacher candidates, including course schedules and the practicum calendar. I also represented the Education Society on the Renewal, Promotion, and Tenure (RPT) Committee, which reviews and establishes evaluation criteria for the renewal, promotion, and tenure of faculty members.
Volunteering in the Education Society has allowed me to work collaboratively with other teacher candidates in order to create a safe and supportive environment for pre-service teachers to build on their knowledge and further develop their skills as educators. The experience has also allowed me to grow as a leader while representing the student body in the pursuit of fundraising endeavours and upholding the principles of social justice in the teaching profession.
