KordaZone Theatre Windsor Presents “1984” by George Orwell.
Adapted for stage by Matthew Dunster.
Directed by Jeffery Bastien.
As a part of the fall line up for 2013, KordaZone Theatre is presenting a stage adaptation of the novel “1984”. Jeffery Bastien’s creative choice as director was to include projection of still and moving images on a 10×13 scrim on stage behind the actors. Most of these video clips and photos are scenes from the play that are either dream sequences, memories or “televised” propaganda segments broadcast by “Big Brother”.
These sequences were shot in Windsor and Tecumseh at some very unique locations! The first location we used was the “Peabody” building on Riverside Drive. We needed a dark dingy place and this old, almost abandoned building was just the thing that did the trick!
Jeffery Bastien negotiated access to this building and we found inspiration in the dilapidation for some of the dream sequences both indoors and outdoors.
Additional locations used were the Objibway grasslands in West end Windsor and Banwell Hill (an old landfill turned naturalized parkspace) in Tecumseh. On the two last days of summer heat in early September we biked and hiked through trails to find the locations for the “golden country” and something that resembles a “cliff or a quarry”.
Mixing video in with theatre is an exciting way to bridge performance mediums and really enhances the experience for the audience who can be transported to real locations as well as imagined ones. Congrats to Jeffery Bastien for his creative vision and to the whole cast and crew for embarking on this mission!
Provided below are links to a few interviews with some cast members, discussing their experiences and the relevance of the story “1984” in today’s society.
